Hard evidence of the benefits of micromobility

Today, more and more people are leaving their cars at home in order to become a part of the growing trend of micromobility. As opposed to a full-size automobile or motorcycle, micromobility relies on bicycles, electric scooters, and even electric bikes to get around town. With these modes of transportation being cheaper than traditional automobiles and motorcycles, there is no wonder why so many people are choosing to swap out their car for an escooter!

So what’s the hard evidence?

Well, in previous articles we have talked about how the micromobility market is growing and how cities are adapting to it and promoting to bring easier commuting and cleaner living environment to people.

These kinds of topics don’t necessarily show the benefits and what’s happening in a scientifically measurable way – except the sales and market data but if we are hard those just mean people buy the products, not how they use them and what their social impact is to the city in everyday life and do they actually reduce car usage and what other kind of changes they cause.

Now there is hard evidence about: “Impacts of micromobility on car displacement with evidence from a natural experiment and geofencing policy” – from Nature energy. The study was made in Atlanta which sets a good base for estimating changes in major US cities.

The paper researches among other things people replace micromobility with cars if micromobility is restricted. Naturally, we see that congestion increases if the choice of using e-bikes and escooters is taken away from people. In the final conclusions the researchers declare:

“Decisions that shape our cities can lead to unexpected effects. We have established that when scooters and e-bikes are banned, drivers experience statistically significant increases in traffic congestion as many riders revert back to passenger vehicles for last-mile transit.”

Some other interesting metrics and findings were:

A major US city shows increases in travel time of 9–11% for daily commuting and 37% for large events if escooters were banned.

Estimated a potential national value of lost time of up to US$536 million, which captures the opportunity cost of lost time in traffic.

The study didn’t pay much attention to the impact on the environment but just the travel times and the fact people have to replace their rides with cars and other forms of transport suggests that the results of a scooter ban wouldn’t be positive.

All in all, it’s a fascinating study that gives hard numbers to prove the benefits of micromobility also from the national economy aspect that isn’t so often talked about.

Fall is here and to celebrate Team Langfeite decided to have some fun and head out to ride our scooters in the wild. Last time we showed how the Langfeite C3 looks in action and now it’s the turn of the C2. Naturally, we had to take it to top speed and play around, this C2 was equipped with nice wide road tires so we didn’t go off-roading with it except a bit at the beach. The C2 is mainly aimed at commuting in the city and with those softer round lines, speed range and overall riding experience we think we have done a great job.

Fall is here and to celebrate Team Langfeite decided to have some fun and head out to ride our scooters in the wild. Fast, speed, playing around and some tricks ensued. Let’s take a look at how the C3 off-road and city models performed!

It was a great day. Our trickster team member really took the C3 for everything it got 55 km/h top speed on the road, and really rough hill climbs on rocky forest paths that put those two 1000W motors to work. It’s a great scooter if you want to same fun. Nimble too, great choice for some tricks and playing around.

What is this last-mile delivery?

NABSA report says micromobility is recovering

A North American Bikeshare & Scootershare Association NABSA’s recent report confirmed that shared micromobility usage rebounded in 2021.

In the report, it was stated that the usage of micromobility in 2021 fell short of the 2019 level but has since had a strong bounce back and has now the amount of systems has surpassed the levels of 2019 at least in the areas covered by the report which were the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Although the amount of systems has increased the number of rides didn’t yet surpass the number of rides done in 2019 but as 2021 had 128 million rides – 53% more than in 2020 – the direction of the trend is clear.

The chosen method of micromobility has the same trend as it is in Europe meaning that electric scooters are used more than electric bicycles for instance – out of all trips about half were done on escooters a raise from 30% before. From Langfeite’s viewpoint, the share of rides is likely to grow in North America the same as in Europe. This doesn’t mean that the escooters are taking all the trips though and as the actual number of trips rose they rose for the ebikes and traditional bikes too. In the report, NABSA had counted 298 cities and at least one sharing system and 97 that had both ebike and escooter fleets.

North American Micromobility fleets by vehicle type and other interesting metrics were:

57% of Electric scooters
There was 70% of agencies reported more weekend riding than before
Most users are males 25-44 years old
58% of shared fleets are operated by companies
29% of shared fleets are operated by governments
13% of shared fleets are operated by Non-profits

These findings from North America are showing a similar direction as micromobility has had in Europe and in our opinion would match the trends other urban areas around the world are seeing as well, namely the choice of vehicles being escooters and the reasons why people choose micromobility. One could argue that the adoption and process are quite straightforward at this point and something that is naturally replicated all around the world.
