2021 - The Year of eScooter Market Boom

Published 2021/9/2

It has long been thought that electric scooters might be more of a niche product. Electric scooter really symbolizes the personality of someone who uses it. When you ride an electric scooter on the street, you will find the eyes of pedestrians are focused on you. Being unique is its greatest advantage. But when you evaluate the other features and benefits of e-scooters, it’s obvious that although they have a wealth of features and diversity of gameplay, it seems that they don’t perform as competitive as their competitors (alternatives) when it comes to their strengths. For example, as a means of commuting, bicycles are considered a more economical option. When purchasing some entertainment devices, products like skateboards tend to be more playable and challenging. This information gives you the illusion that electric scooters may be just the casual playthings of the rich and hobbyists. Hence, while they are fascinating, there is not a huge market for them.

No huge market? Is that really the case?

Of course not. Not only is there a broad market for e-scooters, but at the same time, this industry is rocketing. Here are some reports that support my conclusion. The related report ‘French e-scooter sales outnumber e-bike market volume’ written by Michel de Chavanon on https://www.bike-eu.com/ presented a fact about its market:

After only a few years on the market, there are more than two million users in France and the e-scooter is for the second consecutive year, the preferred means for urban mobility, the research showed. “The e-scooter is today the flagship of urban mobility and represents 69% of the sales in this market”, says Jean Ambert, CEO of Smart Mobility Lab a partner in the study.

It was a massive year for electric scooters.

The adoption of the e-scooter has soared throughout the lockdown.

To avoid high exposure to coronavirus, residents are looking for a completely new transport mode. They want to find a kind of product which can help them travel alone conveniently and must be not too traditional at the same time.

More people are trying its rental e-scooters as a safe alternative to chauffeur-driven Ubers and Lyfts. The share of trips taken by first-time users doubled in North America, experts explained, following the outbreak. Even now, a third of all trips in the region are taken by people who have never hired an e-scooter before. That doesn’t mean that overall rentals have grown, necessarily, but it shows a broader acceptance of the general concept.

The business of these rental e-scooters companies extends beyond rentals, though. They launched the specific product recently. Obviously, these companies see interest or potential in the direct-to-consumer model.

People and governments are likely to take more interest in environmental topics and products.

Companies today are eager to label all their products and services as green.  Some products do not play a significant role in environmental protection. However, only if it has a little relationship with environmental protection, the enterprise will advertise its environmental characteristics.

Electric scooters are by far one of the leading green products, which contribute to environmental protection directly and effectively. Electric scooter transportation helps in minimizing carbon emissions and is an eco-friendly means of transport. Zero exhaust emissions, helping to optimize poor air quality in cities.

The legal requirements specified by the government for e-scooter driving also present the increasing market.

France introduced legislation to regulate the use of e-scooters in urban traffic in 2019. Regulators in the US have introduced permit schemes that mitigate some of the traffic problems caused by electric scooters. The UK, as another example, announced in June that shareable scooters would be allowed the following month. It wasn’t a free-for-all, though – companies still needed permission to operate, and riders needed a full or provisional car, motorcycle or moped license. The UK isn’t awash with schemes, but early approvals have increased the nation’s access and acceptance of the technology.

These regulations show a fact that the number of electric scooters has been so large that some traffic regulations need to be made to manage them better. The introduction of relevant laws will increase the exposure of e-scooters in various media including video platforms and some traditional media. This will definitely increase people’s knowledge of the product and their desire to buy it.
